Fanatec Boost Kit 180 review

A 180 W power supply at 99.95 euros that takes the CSL DD from 5 to 8 Nm. What it brings, and why the decision belongs at the moment you order the base.

The Boost Kit 180 is a 180 W power supply that replaces the 90 W unit supplied with the CSL DD and the Gran Turismo DD Pro. It sells for 99.95 euros.

What it changes

Maximum torque rises from 5 to 8 Nm, 60 % more. The base detects the unit by itself and unlocks the extra power, with no handling or setting required. The increase does not cost durability: Fanatec states that it designed and validated both bases with this unit in mind.

It replaces, it does not add

Bundle pages explain this point badly: if you tick the Boost Kit when ordering, the standard 90 W supply is not included. You end up with one bigger unit instead of two. Once the base has been bought with its 90 W unit, adding the Boost Kit later leaves you with a power supply you will have no use for.

Working out when to buy

The Ready2Race 5 Nm bundle costs 379.95 euros, the 8 Nm one 479.95 euros. The gap is exactly 100.00 euros, and the Boost Kit alone is 99.95 euros. So Fanatec gives no discount on the power upgrade in the bundle: it is charged at list price.

That means waiting costs nothing in money, and ordering straight away costs nothing either. Only the unused 90 W unit separates the two scenarios.

Compatibility

CSL DD and Gran Turismo DD Pro, nothing else. Fanatec states that no other base from the brand accepts it, and that using a third-party power supply voids the base's warranty.

Order it with the base if the budget allows. Adding it later costs the same and leaves you with a 90 W power supply on your hands.

Do without if you are starting out and 5 Nm is enough for you: the difference shows on heavy cars and single-seaters, less in GT.

Its score reflects what it is: a power supply. It does exactly what it claims, on two bases and two only.
