Under the 1000 euro mark the direct drive market has become crowded, and that is exactly what makes the choice hard. Every base in this selection shares the same technology: the wheel mounts straight onto the motor shaft, with no belt and no gears. The differences therefore sit somewhere other than the principle.

Three criteria actually shape the decision. Torque comes first, though it matters less than people assume: past 8 Nm, what you feel is decided by the rigidity of your mount rather than by the base's spec sheet. A 12 Nm base bolted to a flexing desk passes on less information than an 8 Nm base mounted rigidly.

The ecosystem comes next. Buying a base means picking a quick release standard, a catalogue of rims and a configuration tool. That choice commits your later purchases far more than the initial torque figure, and it costs considerably more to reverse.

Console compatibility comes last. It does not depend on the USB port but on a licence chip: a base sold for PC will never become PlayStation or Xbox compatible through a firmware update.
