Fanatec CSL DD Ready2Race 5 Nm bundle review

Base, wheel and pedals for 379.95 euros, 159.90 euros less than buying them separately. What the set is worth once assembled, and the compatibility that narrows without warning.

The Ready2Race 5 Nm combines the CSL DD base in its 5 Nm version, the CSL P1 V2 wheel and the CSL pedals. It sells for 379.95 euros.

The saving is real

Piece by piece, the same set costs 539.85 euros: 299.95 for the base, 139.95 for the wheel, 99.95 for the pedals. The bundle therefore saves 159.90 euros, 30 % of the separate price, and Fanatec shows the same figure on its own page. The gap is wide enough for the bundle to stay worthwhile even if one of the three items only half suits you, because selling it second-hand will cost less than the difference.

What the assembled set gives you

Everything comes from the same brand, so there is nothing to hunt for: the wheel clips on with QR2, the pedals plug into the base with RJ12, and the settings menu is driven from the rim. That convenience argues for the bundle more than the price does.

The weak point of the set is torque. At 5 Nm, the base handles GT and touring cars without complaint, but it saturates on heavy-steering cars. The Boost Kit 180 lifts that limit, and it is better decided now than later: its price is the same in the bundle and on its own.

The second point is the brake, which works with a spring and foam, with no load cell. It is the first part you will want to replace, before the base and before the wheel.

The compatibility narrows

The CSL DD base works on Xbox provided it is paired with an Xbox-licensed Fanatec wheel. The P1 V2 supplied in this bundle is not one: it is designed for PC. The bundle as sold is therefore a PC bundle, even though the base could do otherwise with another wheel.

On PlayStation, there is nothing to hope for: the CSL DD is not compatible with any Sony console and no upgrade will make it compatible.

The mount is not in the box

Fanatec sells a table clamp separately, designed for desktops from 5 to 60 mm. The bundle contains nothing to fix the base. Count that cost from the start: the stiffness of the mounting decides part of what you feel.

Take it for a first direct drive setup on PC. A third off the price, three parts that work together, and a way into the most extensive rim catalogue on the market.

Take the 8 Nm version instead if you already know 5 Nm will not be enough. The Boost Kit costs the same bought later, and you would be left with a useless power supply.

Rule it out if you play on console: this bundle is a PC bundle, whatever the base can do with another wheel.
